Christian, what do you believe when you say,“I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth”? That the eternal Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who out of nothing created heaven and earthand everything in them, who still upholds and rules them by his eternal counsel and providence,is my God and Father because of Christ the Son.I trust God so much that I do not doubt he will provide whatever I need for body and soul, and will turn to my good whatever adversity he sends upon me in this sad world. God is able to do this because he is almighty Godand desires to do this because he is a faithful Father.

*Opening Prayer and Confession of Faith                               Heidelberg Catechism, Q. 60

Christian, how are you righteous before God? Even though my conscience accuses me of having grievously sinned against all God’s commandments and of never having kept any of them, and even though I am still inclined toward all evil, nevertheless, without deserving it at all, out of sheer grace, God grants and credits to me the perfect satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness of Christ, as if I have never sinned nor been a sinner, as if I had been as perfectly obedient as Christ was obedient for me. All I need to do is accept this gift of God with a believing heart.
